Pole Carports in Durban: Building a Timber and Shadecloth Carport That Lasts

How to plan a treated timber and shadecloth carport that keeps your car cool and stands up to the coast

A covered parking spot makes a real difference in Durban. Sustained sun fades paintwork and cracks dashboards, and a car that has stood in the open on a February afternoon is not pleasant to get into. Pole carports in Durban are one of the simplest and most cost-effective ways to solve that: a frame of CCA-treated timber poles, joined with steel brackets and covered with shadecloth. Durban Poles supplies everything you need, from the treated poles and brackets to the cloth, concrete mix and fixings.

Why pole carports suit Durban’s climate

A solid roof keeps the rain off, but it also traps hot air underneath. Shadecloth works differently: it blocks most of the sun while letting air move through, so the space under it stays noticeably cooler. That airflow also matters when the wind picks up. Wind passes through shadecloth instead of pushing against it like a sail, which puts less load on the poles and fixings.

Timber is a natural fit for the frame. SABS-approved, CCA-treated poles, treated to H4 level for ground contact, resist rot and insects in humid coastal conditions and do not rust in salt air the way untreated steel can. Round poles also give a carport a softer, natural look that blends into a garden.

What goes into pole carports in Durban

A typical single-car pole carport is a simple structure built from a handful of components:

  • Upright poles. Usually four or six round CCA-treated poles, set into the ground along each side of the parking bay. We stock poles in diameters up to 150mm and lengths from 1.2m up to 7.2m, so there is room to allow for the depth in the ground as well as the clearance you need above.
  • Beams and rafters. Round poles laid across the tops of the uprights to form the roof frame that the cloth is fixed to.
  • Gumbo brackets. Metal connectors made for round-pole timber structures. They create strong, reliable joints and let the frame go up quickly without cutting into the poles and weakening the preservation treatment. Carports, nurseries and shadehouses are exactly what they are designed for.
  • Shadecloth. We stock dark green 80% shade factor cloth, sold by the metre in 1.8m wide rolls. For a wider span, lengths are joined or the frame is designed around the available width.
  • Fixings and concrete. Galvanised or ringshank nails and bracing straps are available from our nails and miscellaneous range, and we stock concrete mix in 40kg bags alongside our poles.

Setting the poles properly

A carport is only as strong as its uprights, so this is the step worth getting right. Poles should be buried deep enough for stability, and the hole should be filled so that moisture can drain away from the base of the pole rather than collecting around it. Pack and tamp soil firmly around each pole as you go, check that it is plumb from two sides, and let any concrete cure before loading the frame.

Exposed sites, such as homes on a ridge or close to the beachfront, need closer pole spacing and a firmer installation than a sheltered driveway between two walls. If you are not sure, tell us where the carport is going and we’ll advise on pole sizes and spacing.

Fitting the shadecloth

Cloth that is too slack will flap in the wind, and flapping is what tears it at the fixing points over time. Pull the cloth taut across the rafters and fix it at regular intervals along every edge, not only at the corners. Our guide to shadecloth in Durban explains shade factors, roll sizes and fixing in more detail.

One more thing to plan for: shadecloth gives shade, not shelter from heavy rain. If you need a dry spot to unload shopping in a summer downpour, ask us about other roofing options for the same timber frame.

Before you build a pole carport

A few practical checks save time later:

  • Measure the space, not just the car. Allow room to open the doors on both sides and to walk around the vehicle. Note the height of anything you may need to fit underneath, like a roof rack or a bakkie canopy.
  • Check the rules. Depending on its size and position, a carport may need approval from eThekwini Municipality, and estates and complexes often have their own rules about structures and colours. A quick check before you buy materials avoids surprises.
  • Look up and down. Watch for overhead cables, low branches and underground pipes before digging pole holes.

Looking after a pole carport

Once it is up, a pole carport needs very little attention. Check the brackets and fixings once a year, re-tension the cloth if it starts to sag, and keep soil and garden waste from piling up against the bottom of the poles. A coat of Waxol on the timber helps it shed water and resist sun bleaching. Shadecloth will eventually need replacing after years of sun, but that is a quick job on a sound frame. The South African Wood Preservers Association has more on how treated timber is protected for outdoor use.
